Example 1. There are 645 oranges, 129 apples and 326 bananas in a store. How many
fruits are there in all?
Solution.
Number of oranges = 6 4 5
Number of apples = 1 2 9
Number of bananas = + 3 2 6
Total number of fruits = 1 1 0 0
So, the store has 1100 fruits in all.
Example 2. A factory produces 2325, 2837 and 987 bulbs in three consecutive days.
How many bulbs are produced altogether in these three days?
Solution.
Number of bulbs produced on the 1st day = 2 3 2 5
Number of bulbs produced on the 2nd day = 2 8 3 7
Number of bulbs produced on the 3rd day = + 9 8 7
Total production of bulbs in three days = 6 1 4 9
Example 3. In a colony, there are 2658 men, 2257 women and 3445 children. Find the
population of the colony.
Solution. In a colony:
Number of men = 2 6 5 8
Number of women = 2 2 5 7
Number of children = + 3 4 4 5
The population of the colony = 8 3 6 0
